I just listed to the Ankler's podcast where they discuss this and I also struggle to understand what their strategy is with Apple TV+ and content production. I love that they are producing great shows and movies but I'm so curious about how it fits their overall business.
First, I see you all over Substack offering support and thoughtful questions like this one. It’s so inspiring. They need a super contributor badge or something.
I love his question. The short answer is I have no idea! My favorite theory is that it’s one big employee recruitment tool for Apple. Who doesn’t want to work on a future Oscar-winning movie? Steve Jobs lured John Sculley away from Pepsi by asking if he wanted to change the world or sell more sugar water.
You are too kind 😊. Thank you for the best compliment you could have given me.
I love this theory. Honestly it works on me. I would join them in a heartbeat if it meant I could work with their content department at some point.
My main way less sexy theory is that they are building some premium inventory to grow their ad business. 2 years ago, I would have not really bet on Apple turning to ads but they seem to have gone all in with their app store ads so who knows... I like your theory better though 😆

Do you have any thoughts?

Very possible! I’m sure they are loving the extra revenue from the App Store ads.
